BLACK HISTORY IS WORLD HISTORY

While Black History is synonymous with prominent contributors such as Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, Maya Angelou, Jackie Robinson, and Barack Obama--our online learning profiles represent other Black men and women who've made a profound impact in the fields of science, politics, law, sports, the arts, entertainment, and many other fields.  

• Prince Hall Freemasonry, the oldest and largest predominantly Black fraternity. The tradition started by Prince Hall over 200 years ago is still carried on today.  
• Brom and Betts v. Ashley, a “freedom suit”. Elizabeth" Mum Bett" Freeman would ultimately lead the Supreme Judicial Court to outlaw slavery in Massachusetts.   
• Provident Hospital, the first black-controlled hospital in the U.S. Daniel Hale Williams co-founded the medical facility and the first training facility for Black nurses.
• The Escape; Or, A Leap for Freedom, the first Black play published. The play, written by abolitionist William Wells Brown, follows the story of two slaves from different owners who marry in secrecy. 
• Wilberforce University, the first college to be owned and operated by Blacks. Affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), Daniel Alexander Payne was selected to lead the college. 

Ever since the days of slavery, education has been used as a method to quell Black children's Pursuit of Happiness. Black History laid the foundation for much of American history--and there would be no America if not for the contributions of African Americans.
